The Lasting Impact of Faith

A friend of mine recently shared a story that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

It’s a story about faith during one of the hardest seasons of a man’s life. It’s also a reminder of something many people overlook when they talk about contact centers and outsourcing.

Most people see customer service. Many of us see jobs. But for millions of people around the world, this industry has represented something much bigger: hope.

In the contact center world, we measure almost everything. KPIs. Behaviors. Staffing Levels. P&Ls. We build dashboards (and risk matrices) to tell us where to focus and whether or not we are moving the needle. Yet some of the most important indicators of success never appear on a report – Faith is one of them.

Before joining the BPO industry, my friend Monde, his wife, and their children were living in a small one-room garage apartment. He had built a small food business that supported his family, supplying pastries and other baked goods to local businesses and members of their community. Things were going well, and they were grateful.

Then COVID arrived. The economic impact that followed devastated countless small businesses, including his. Overnight, the income his family depended on vanished. Like many people during times of crisis, he did everything he knew to do. He applied for jobs. He sent resumes. He followed up. He prayed.

And like many people who find themselves in difficult seasons, he began asking a question that is far older than any of us: “God, do You still see me?”

One evening, after receiving a small government relief grant, he took his family grocery shopping. They carefully selected only what they could afford, stretching every cent. As they walked through the store, they noticed another family pushing overflowing trolleys (carts).

That’s when his daughter began to cry. When he asked what was wrong, she told him: “Tata, do you know what my greatest wish is?” He smiled and guessed it was chocolate or cereal. She shook her head. “My greatest wish is to see us pushing a trolley full of everything we need.”

Monde’s heart broke.

That night, he lay awake and prayed. He asked God why they had been forgotten. Why every application seemed to go nowhere. Why every door remained closed. Yet even in his disappointment, he could still see hope in his wife and children. Little did he know that within weeks God would begin opening doors that would change everything.

An opportunity emerged through a connection in the BPO industry, but Monde was not hired for the role. It was another disappointment. Another closed door.

Or so it seemed.

Just a week later, another opportunity appeared. A virtual interview was scheduled, but an electricity outage in his area threatened to derail it. Instead of giving up, he found transportation and traveled to the office for a face-to-face interview. And he got the job.

Three years ago this month, Monde joined Dash BPO in Johannesburg, South Africa. Today he serves as an Operations Manager, leading others and providing for the family that once wondered if there would be enough.

Not because life suddenly became easy. The hardship, uncertainty, and suffering were real. But because God provided the right opportunity at exactly the right time, and Monde was ready to walk through the door when it opened.

He and his family faced something overwhelming, yet persevered. And even in the darkest moments when they felt lost and abandoned, faith sustained their hope.

Their story is deeply personal, but it isn’t unique. For decades, the contact center and BPO industry has created opportunities in countries and communities that have often been overlooked by traditional economic development. It has provided first jobs, career paths, leadership opportunities, education, stability, and hope for people who simply needed a chance.

Those of us who have spent our careers in this industry sometimes become consumed by metrics, staffing models, technology, and customer outcomes. Those things are important, but stories like Monde’s remind us what really matters.

Behind every dashboard is a person.

Behind every employee ID is a family.

Behind every hiring class is a community.

And behind many success stories is someone carrying burdens that nobody else can see.

Monde’s story resonates with what I’ve learned repeatedly in my own life: Faith is strengthened most during the seasons when it seems hardest to hold onto.

It isn’t simply about getting a job. It’s about discovering that what looked like rejection was actually redirection. It’s about realizing that God was ever present in the waiting. It’s about understanding that some prayers are answered in ways we don’t expect and could never predict.

It’s a reminder that no one is forgotten.

Not by God. Not by people willing to create opportunities. And not by an industry that has quietly transformed lives and communities around the world.

We often talk about the impact of the contact center and BPO industry in terms of jobs created, customers served, or economic growth.

But the real impact is found in stories like Monde’s. A father who refused to quit. A daughter’s simple wish. A door that finally opened. And a family whose future changed forever.

The most important indicator wasn’t on a dashboard. It was faith. And because of that faith, hope endured long enough for opportunity to arrive.
